If the plastic casing around the 3DS XL hinge is cracked, the screen no longer locks into position, the wobble is significantly greater than normal, the upper screen cannot stay upright, the hinge no longer makes its usual clicking sound, or the casing feels loose and unstable, then the hinge assembly is damaged and needs to be replaced.
